Siren

From Their World, Three Worlds by Dai Pan (潘岱). Poem 13.

I hear from afar,
The siren breaks the city apart.
My heart suddenly wrapped in blood vessels,
flooded with fires, my brain goes wild.
Breathing in the ice-cold air, night,
Burnt aftermath, staring blankly.
I said thank you for my safety,
At this moment, I can hear the siren.

I think again, distant plains,
Under the endless streetlights, grown.
You can't hear any sound, at eight, at night.
Only on screens, children laugh, sad.

Imagined as prayer, waiting in silence,
To be devoured by wolves in the valley.
Behind closed doors, children's hands reach —
Toward the light of the door.
Shadows rushing toward each other, I see,
Mouths wide open, waving arms, chasing, running.
They cry out silently,
Jumping, howling in a night without sirens.

I can still stay calm, can still hear,
I feel the outdoors, from the dark,
The wind carrying children's dreams, echoes, happiness.

I know the sirens dance between belief and hope,
Lingering by my ears,
Rising like mist from the depths of the waiting hearts.

I know the sirens sweep from valleys to plains to seabed,
bringing peace.

Their World 13

Siren

I hear from afar,
The siren breaks the city apart.
My heart suddenly wrapped in blood vessels,
flooded with fires, // my brain goes wild.
Breathing in the ice-cold air, // night,
Burnt aftermath, staring blankly.
I said thank you for my safety,
At this moment, I // can hear the siren.

I think again, distant plains,
Under the endless streetlights, // grown.
You can't hear any sound, // at eight, at night.
Only on screens, children laugh, // sad.

Imagined as prayer, // waiting in silence,
To be devoured by wolves // in the valley.
Behind closed doors, // children's hands reach —
Toward the light of the door.
Shadows rushing toward each other, // I see,
Mouths wide open, waving arms, // chasing, running.
They cry out silently,
Jumping, howling in a night without sirens.

I can still stay calm, // can still hear,
I feel the outdoors, // from the dark,
The wind carrying children's dreams, // echoes, happiness.

I know the sirens dance // between belief and hope,
Lingering by my ears,
Rising like mist from the depths // of the waiting hearts.

I know the sirens sweep // from valleys to plains to seabed,
bringing peace.
