Candle
Flicker, candle, dance and glow,
How you move like waves that flow.
You're but a fire soul in chains,
Yes, you are listening to my pains,
I have no one to confide,
Keep my anxious fears inside.
Watch my child, today, I did,
Eyes fixed, far away, outside.
He weeps, laughs with glee,
Leaping, running, wild and free.
Heaven!
Who knows what's in his sight!
You know, dear, I am on his side.
Stream flows silent in the moonlight,
Nothing there but water quiet.
You understand me, candle dear,
He has no one for his tales,
Yet his chatter never fails.
Has my child, through all these years,
Built up any friends that aren't here?
I cannot believe, I cannot bear.
Candle bright, I cannot hear,
Friends for him should not appear.
He must lie! in this grand town,
Village child of low renown,
Cannot flee his birthed-in fate,
Must learn caution, must learn hate.
Fox-like, wary, always scared,
Friendship's price cannot be spared.
(In whispered tone —) from outside.
Candle! Look!
Outside they stand!
I've watched long, you know,
I am not crazy.
They must hear my words tonight.
People are real in pale moonlight!
Candle soul, your dancing form,
Why should freedom be your norm?
While I watch with bitter eyes,
Someone else's child nearby.
(A cry—) The candle dies.
World finds peace in darkness deep,
This is what all souls would keep.
Lowborn, wicked, fade from sight...
Peace at last, through the darkest night.
